Because Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (Progeria) is extremely rare, a central repository with a sufficient number of samples is essential to facilitate global research. The PRF Cell & Tissue Bank fills that need, growing from just a few cell lines at its founding in 2002 to over 200 today. The bank was instrumental in discovering the gene mutation responsible for Progeria and in testing multiple treatments in preclinical studies.
Goals
- Ensure sufficient availability of cells for approved research projects
- Incentivize new research projects globally
- Support the study of the biochemical basis of Progeria
- Discover relationships between Progeria and generalized aging
- Advance discoveries leading to new treatments for children with Progeria
- Contribute to finding a cure for Progeria

PUBLICATIONS
For all publications resulting from the use of biological samples from the PRF Cell and Tissue Bank, we ask researchers to please use the following information within the materials and methods section (not simply the acknowledgments). This wording may vary slightly, depending on which materials were supplied for the research:
“Cells and Cell Culture; Human primary dermal fibroblast cell lines were obtained from The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) Cell and Tissue Bank. The HGPS cell lines were XXX, XXX, XXX; the control lines were XXX, XXX, XXX.”

PRF has partnered with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) for storage and distribution of iPSC lines. Many thanks to Dr. William Stanford and Dr. Wing Chang for establishing the iPSC branch of this bank.
Thank you to the many foundations that have supported the PRF Cell & Tissue Bank with generous grants, and to Sharon Terry (Genetic Alliance), Dr. David Kiszkiss (Brown University Research Foundation), and Claire Driscoll (National Human Genome Research Institute) for their help in establishing the bank.
