\"Megan-bearJun07\"Quando um casal de Massachusetts, Drs. Leslie Gordon e o filho de Scott Berns, Sam, foi diagnosticado com Progeria em 1998, eles imediatamente come\u00e7aram a coletar o m\u00e1ximo de informa\u00e7\u00f5es que puderam encontrar sobre a doen\u00e7a. Mas eles descobriram que praticamente nada existia. N\u00e3o havia como testar definitivamente a doen\u00e7a, nenhum financiamento de pesquisa dispon\u00edvel e praticamente ningu\u00e9m defendendo essas crian\u00e7as. Ent\u00e3o, no in\u00edcio de 1999, eles reuniram familiares, amigos e colegas e estabeleceram a The Progeria Research Foundation. A m\u00e3e de Sam \u00e9 a Diretora M\u00e9dica da PRF, respons\u00e1vel pelos esfor\u00e7os m\u00e9dicos e de pesquisa para crian\u00e7as com Progeria.<\/p>\n

Em apenas alguns anos, a PRF criou e centralizou todos os recursos relacionados \u00e0 pesquisa necess\u00e1rios para impulsionar o mais r\u00e1pido poss\u00edvel em dire\u00e7\u00e3o aos tratamentos e \u00e0 cura, para todas as crian\u00e7as diagnosticadas com Progeria em todo o mundo. A PRF foi a for\u00e7a motriz por tr\u00e1s da Progeria de 2003 descoberta gen\u00e9tica<\/a>; criou, possui e opera seu pr\u00f3prio banco de dados m\u00e9dico e de pesquisa<\/a>, banco de c\u00e9lulas e tecidos<\/a>, e programa de testes de diagn\u00f3stico<\/a>; realiza eventos cient\u00edficos semestrais\u00a0oficinas<\/a>; fundos bolsas de pesquisa<\/a>\u00a0e ensaios cl\u00ednicos de medicamentos<\/a>; e fornece assist\u00eancia m\u00e9dica e outras\u00a0apoiar<\/a> para as fam\u00edlias. Todos os programas e realiza\u00e7\u00f5es da PRF fizeram da PRF a l\u00edder mundial em pesquisa e educa\u00e7\u00e3o sobre Progeria. E \u00e0 medida que a conscientiza\u00e7\u00e3o sobre a Progeria, sua liga\u00e7\u00e3o com doen\u00e7as card\u00edacas e envelhecimento, e os programas agora dispon\u00edveis para pesquisa se espalham pelo mundo, nos aproximamos de salvar as vidas dessas crian\u00e7as especiais.<\/p>\n

A PRF foi concebida com a vis\u00e3o de uma m\u00e3e que sabia que, para vencer essa corrida contra o tempo para seu filho e as outras crian\u00e7as com Prog\u00e9ria, ter\u00edamos que construir uma rede de necessidades relacionadas \u00e0 pesquisa para incentivar a pesquisa sobre Prog\u00e9ria.<\/p>\n

Os resultados foram surpreendentes; a PRF floresceu com a apoiar <\/a>de seus dedicados volunt\u00e1rios, funcion\u00e1rios e doadores, catapultando o campo da Prog\u00e9ria e seus dist\u00farbios relacionados ao envelhecimento (como doen\u00e7as card\u00edacas e osteoporose) para um novo reino.<\/p>\n

But they discovered that practically nothing existed. There was no way to definitively test for the disease, no research funding available, and virtually no one advocating for these children. So in early 1999, they gathered family, friends and colleagues and established The Progeria Research Foundation. Sam\u2019s mother is PRF\u2019s Medical Director, responsible for both medical and research efforts for children with Progeria.\r\n

In just a few short years, PRF has created and centralized all of the research-related resources needed to propel forward as quickly as possible towards treatments and cure, for all children diagnosed with Progeria worldwide. PRF was the driving force behind the 2003 Progeria gene discovery<\/a>; created, owns and operates its own medical & research database<\/a>, cell & tissue bank<\/a>, and diagnostics testing program<\/a>; holds bi-annual scientific\u00a0workshops<\/a>; funds research grants<\/a>\u00a0and clinical drug trials<\/a>;\u00a0and provides medical and other\u00a0support<\/a> for the families.\u00a0All of PRF\u2019s programs and accomplishments have made PRF the world leader in Progeria research and education. And as awareness of Progeria, its link to heart disease and aging, and the programs now available for research spreads throughout the world, we move closer to saving the lives of these special children.<\/p>\r\nPRF was conceived with the vision of a mother who knew that in order to win this race against time for her son and the other children with Progeria, we would have to build the network of research-related needs to encourage Progeria research.\r\n
